I normally wouldn't mention another writer on a writer's site, but Joe has made no small secret that F Paul Wilson was one of the writers that made him want to be a writer.
And I can't help but agree.
I loved all of Joe's books. They were fun to read, and always kept me entertained.
However, I could go to sleep on time when reading them. When I drive into work, I wake up early -- 4:45 or so -- to beat traffic. So, the night before I go in, I try not to sleep after 10pm. When reading a Jack Daniels novel, I would read an extra chapter or so after 10 (they were VERY fun to read), but I could put them down.
Not so much with the Repairman Jack series. Since Christmas, I've been reading books 7 and up (Gateways to Harbingers, which I'm now reading). So far, I've read about 1500 pages -- and have stayed up WAY too many nights reading "just one more chapter" (and suffering a 4-hour night of sleep too many times). And that doesn't include the first 6 books, which I barreled through with a vengeance.
Anyway, this is a long-winded way to say I've changed my goal as a writer.
I doubt I'll ever be able to support myself as a writer. I would love to, but doubt with what I make in my career I'll be able to ever make enough as a writer to quit.
So, my next goal was to get a book on a shelf at B&N. That is still one of my goals. However...
My new goal is to write a book that keeps people up way past their bedtime. I want people to "one more chapter" themselves into being late for work/school/whatever.
I don't care about being the best writer in the world. I just want at least some people to fuck up their sleep schedule staying awake to read something I wrote.
And at this, I will succeed. Everything else is secondary.
